The Four-in-Hand

With its etymology linked to stories ranging from carriage drivers tying their reins with a four-in-hand knot to those same drivers similarly wearing their scarves, this simple knot is timeless and easy to learn (it’s also said to be RL’s favorite knot). The most likely origin story is that members of the Four-in-Hand club in London began to wear their ties in this style, which led to it becoming a fashion staple. Its narrow and slightly asymmetric silhouette is one of the reasons why I like it so much, with its off-kilter and elongated knot giving it a casual and relaxed vibe that feels like you’re not purposely trying too hard.

Editor’s Note: Never realized how difficult it is to cleanly tie a tie without looking directly in a mirror. Made it work though! 😂 What’s your favorite knot?

Instructions:

Step 1: Wide end over the narrow end

Step 2: Wrap it around and over again

Step 3: Bring it up from behind and down through the knot

Step 4: Cinch it up
